Commentary on Richard Osburn and his family

• Bartholomew and Mary Ann
  Bartholomew and Mary Ann are proven children of Richard's as Richard signed consent notes for their marriages, specifically mentioning that they were his children.
  
  
• Doctor Franklin
  Until Richard's death, Doctor Frank lived near or on Richard's property. The year before he died, Richard sold his land to David Clifton although he and evidently Doctor Frank and his family continued to live on the property. After Richard died, David Clifton went to court to evict Doctor Frank and his family from the property.
  
  
• Charlotte and Elias
  Charlotte Osburn was married to Noah Clifton who served in the War of 1812. Charlotte applied for bounty land and a pension based on her deceased husband's service in the war. In an affidavit he provided for one of Charlotte's applications, Elias specifically states that he was brother of Charlotte. In another part of the application, it is stated that Charlotte was married at the house of Richard Osburn, although no relationship is specifically mentioned.

  Elias had arrangements with Bartholomew for the care of Bartholomew's children when Bartholomew died. These arrangements were cancelled or invalidated by court order after Bartholomew's death.

  Given the above, it seems highly likely that Charlotte and Elias were children of Richard's.
  
  

• Richardson A. (aka Richard A.)
  Richardson spent two years in the Kentucky State Penitiary with Bartholomew. Both men married Woodruff women, possibly sisters. In the early 1850s, Richardson and Doctor Frank both moved to Fountain Co., IN. Given Richardson's association with Bartholomew and Doctor Frank, it seems highly likely that Richardson was also a son of Richard.
  
  
• Eli
  Eli is found in Pendleton Co., KY in the 1810 census and in the Pendleton Co. tax rolls beginning in 1814, the year he was 21. Beginning in 1819, the year Owen Co., KY was formed, Eli is found in the Owen Co., KY tax rolls near Richard. Thus it appears that Eli lived near Richard in the part of Pendleton near Scott Co. that later became part of Owen Co.

  About 1820 Eli moved to Fayette Co., IN. This is about the same time that Jesse Osborn(below) moved to Fayette Co., IN. After just a few years Eli returned to KY. From 1824 to 1829, Eli again appears in the Owen Co. tax rolls. In 1830 Eli is enumerated in the Grant Co., KY census. From 1837 Fayette Co., IN land records relating to his father-in-law Joseph Hawkins, it is clear that Eli had moved to Fountain Co., IN by 1837. About 1852 both Doctor Frank and Richardson moved to Fountain Co., IN where Eli lived.

  Given that Eli Osborn early lived near Richard and later in Fountain Co., IN Doctor Frank and Richardson moved to the vicinity where Eli lived, it appears highly likely that Eli was also a son of Richard.
  
  

• Joab and Jacob
  Joab and Jacob appear in the Scott Co., KY tax rolls in the late 1810s, very near, possibly living with, Richard. Joab is found in the Owen Co., KY tax rolls with Richard through 1820.
  
  
• Jesse
  I previously included Jesse Osborn[#667] as a child of Richard Osburn. I have since removed Jesse from Richard Osburn's family and added him to the family of John Osborn[#6074]. See John Osborn's family for an explanation.
  
  

Possible other children:

• Lucy
  Lucy Osborn is named as mother of James Fortner(1834-1916) on James Fortner's death certificate. The Fortners/Faulkners were enumerated near the Osburns in the 1850 Owen Co., KY census.
  
  
• Mariah
  According to Lett family tradition, the wife of Daniel Lett was a Mariah Osburn, daughter of Richard. No real evidence is cited.
