Comments
Much of what is shown above for the family of John Osborn-11974 is conjecture.
John Osborn-11974 was certainly married to Mehitable Addams and had a son
Samuel. Other aspects of John Osborn-11974's family are presumptions based
on records from Newport, RI.
On 11 Oct 1697 John Osborn-11974 gave power of attorney to "my trusty & well
beloved cousin George Hart cooper" to sell his land in Ipswich, Essex Co.,
MA(Essex Co., MA DB 13/25). Other Essex Co., MA records show that George
Hart was actually cousin of John Osborn-11974's wife Mehitable Addams.
John Osborn-11974 must have moved from Ipswich shortly after this. On 16
May 1698 George Hart "as attorney to John Osburne late of Ipswich cooper"
sold John Osborn-11974's land in Ipswich to Robert Kimball(Essex Co., MA
DB 16/8). Over thirty-six years pass before there is another record of John
Osborn-11974 in Essex Co., MA -- on 1 Jun 1733 George Hart settled with
Samuel Osborn-11981 "Adminstrator to his father John Osborne". Unfortunately,
none of these records reveal where John Osborn-11974 moved to or where Samuel
Osborn-11981 resided at the time he was administrator of his father's estate.
I have not been able to find any administration for John Osborn-11974 within
Massachusetts.
From the will of John Gamage(Jr.)(Essex Co., MA Prob. Vol. 331/229), it is
known that John Osborn-11974's half-brother Henry Osborn[#11991] moved to
Newport, RI. Examination of Newport, RI records provides some evidence for
John Osborn-11974 also being in Newport, RI -- "Wm. Dyre of Newport,
merchant, vs. John Osband of Newport, cooper for L5:5:0 due for goods sold
and delivered in November 1727."(Gleanings from Newport Court Files,
1659-1783, item #467, by Jane Fletcher Fiske). A record of the
records of the Newport, RI Inferior Court of Common Pleas, vol. A/81 shows
that a John Osborn Jr. of Newport, cooper was sued by Charles Morenzo. It
would seem likely that John Osborn, cooper of Newport, RI is the same person
as John Osborn-11974 of Ipswich, MA who is also known to have been a cooper.
Also then that John Osborn-11974 had a son, also named John, who was also a
cooper.
John Osborn-11974's half-brother Henry married Margaret Millard in 1720 at
the Trinity Episcopal Church in Newport. The records of the Trinity Church
show a series of marriages from 1728 to 1734 for James Osborn, William
Osborn, Henry Osborn, and Easter Osborn. It seems quite possible that these
could be grandchildren of John Osborn-11974 either through son John
Osborn-12274 (Jr.) or through son Samuel Osborn-11981.
Hopefully additional records will be found in the future which will help
clarify this family.
